Boston 55 Ranger, a thing of beauty

Velociman has posted a photograph of his pencil sharpener of choice, the Berol Giant. As he waxed on I could not believe how he could hold that, that thing, above my Boston 55 Ranger.

The Boston 55 Ranger, as you can see, is a marvel of engineering, a testament to mankind’s ingenuity, flowing in perfect line and detail to its environment and function. I am hurt.

Velociman said he didn’t want to disparage the venerable Boston sharpener, as he put it “a fine workhorse of a sharpener”, “the tin-stamp look just leaves me cold”.

Velociman's is little, fills fast; mine is shiny, takes a long, long time to fill and then empties in a beautiful push. Eat your heart out Velociman.

I pit my Boston 55 Ranger against his Berol Giant any day. Mine is “the most beautiful amalgam of function and form since the 1966 GTO".

We should have a "sharpdown".

If you put a pencil in the Boston Ranger, will it stay there or do you have to hold it? I had a Plus Corporation pencil sharpener that I could take anywhere--it did not have to be mounted to work because it was designed to hold the pencil without me having to put a hand on it.

I like the old Boston Ranger. I have ony myself I got at a old second hand store for 5 bucks. As old as it is I didn't have to do anything to get it to work, not even oil it. It's still going stronger.
